There’s a new way to manufacture products. It’s called advanced manufacturing. It depends on the use and coordination of information, automation, computation, software, sensing, and networking, and making use of cutting-edge materials.
Advanced manufacturing includes, but is not limited to:
additive manufacturing (three-dimensional (3D) printing)
subtractive
artificial intelligence
robotics
advanced composite materials
Per Army Directive 2019-09,
Enabling Readiness and Modernization Through Advanced Manufacturing,
advanced manufacturing will fundamentally change the way the Army designs, delivers, produces, and sustains materiel capabilities. Examples are manufacturing existing products that are not currently in the supply system, or manufacturing parts that are available but experiencing quality or sourcing issues. Increasing supply availability improves readiness rates.
Besides enhancing readiness, advanced manufacturing can ensure that Warfighters receive critical capabilities when needed. To learn more about CECOM's adoption of advanced manufacturing, see the presentation
