Aviation: Safety of Flight Messages Save Lives

 

Sometimes there are problems with equipment that are serious enough to warrant an immediate, force-protection alert to the field to avert expensive repairs, ensure safety and save lives. In the aviation community, these alerts come in the form of safety of flight (SOF) messages.

Recently, aircraft artisans at Corpus Christi Army Depot, Texas, identified a non-conforming honeycomb seal in a Black Hawk engine. This discovery set in motion a series of events to keep the Army’s Black Hawk and Apache fleets safe from a potentially devastating mechanical failure.
